using food to heal individuals and communities during times of crisis

A message from our founder

Amber Ferguson, Executive Director

When we set out in 2020 amidst the dual disasters of the Almeda & Obenchain wildfires alongside a global pandemic, our mission was to show up in times of crisis - the years have come and gone, the way that we view crisis and disaster has shifted into an omnipresent reality - one in which we will to continue to address food security and build a supported local food economy so that we can have

a more durable future

Looking back to 2024 it’s incredible to see what RFU has achieved in addressing food security. In just one year alone, we were able to serve nearly 100,000 people at the Neighbors Unite Farmers Markets throughout the Rogue Valley, purchasing over 215,000 pounds of produce from local farms. We continued to show up alongside the 2020 wildfire survivors that are still in the process of rebuilding their lives amidst what is a high barrier journey, through our disaster case management program with resource navigation and care. We responded to the January ice storm, helping to provide 3,740 hot meals and 1,000 provision boxes, recirculating more than $225,000 into Oregon communities.

This past year we began exploring policy and advocacy work at the state level - through an expansion of our outreach programs: addressing food security and food systems work at every level we can. We partnered with local farms in creating the Southern Oregon Farmers Network - working on crop planning and creating a more resilient food system. We also participated in the first iteration of the Red Cross Community Adaptation Program (CAP): Partnership with the Red Cross cements our abilities to be responsive, and this program allowed for permanent improvements to our infrastructure. We are so appreciative of our partnerships with community and statewide organizations, because without these we wouldn’t be here to continue to do this work.

Even amidst a rapidly changing political climate and a constant eye on the horizon, we continue to be positively impacted by our involvement in Oregon communities. We are taking time ahead of possible future disasters to fortify relationships, build trust, and strengthen bonds. We’ve begun creating a line of freeze-dried meals (MREs) utilizing organic ingredients, sourced throughout Oregon. We have been able to co-create recipes with some of Oregon’s great chefs. This program will create more jobs as well as more investment in locally grown food. These meals can be stored throughout the state so that in future crises, food will be easily accessible, especially when other infrastructure is impacted. In addition to looking ahead, we are working to solidify long-term funding to support our Neighbors Unite Markets so that we can continue to positively impact people's ability to access healthy fresh food.

RFU is committed to changing the model of the food system: seeing healthy, nourishing food as a fundamental right, investing into our local economies with purchasing from local farmers, producers, and restaurants, and advocating for policy change to positively impact food security for all individuals. Our strength to build this foundation for a better future lies in all of our partnerships: the communities we support, the volunteers that we are incredibly fortunate to have, our amazing donors and grantors, and our phenomenal staff.

Thank you

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

RFU continues to make strategic investments in our programs to support our collective efforts to build a robust and resilient food system that can support our communities in times of crisis. Over the next couple of years, RFU will deepen our investment into our Ashland facilities and emergency preparedness efforts to ensure that we can meet the needs of our statewide communities no matter what unfolds. Thanks to the generous support of our funding partners, RFU is well positioned to succeed in these trying times.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

DISASTER CASE MANAGEMENT

Rogue Food Unites® is honored to continue helping our local community navigate the complex phases of recovery. By providing trauma-informed Disaster Case Management, we hope to see more healing and empowerment for individuals in our community who were affected by the 2020 wildfires.

My family was affected by the Oregon wildfires, I am very grateful to the disaster managers at Rogue Food Unites® for helping my family get funding for a bed so I can continue my recovery. Thank you so much for your help.

NEIGHBORS UNITE MARKET

A basket of fresh vegetables including celery, radishes, carrots, lettuce, green onion, avocado, lemon, lime, and purple kohlrabi, placed on a colorful floral tablecloth.

Our Neighbors Unite No-Cost, No-Barrier Farmer’s Market is a reliable, free-of-charge offering of organic produce and does not restrict participation based on paperwork or perceived need. A unique feature of this market is that Rogue Food Unites® is able to serve community members who have unmet food needs and do not qualify for government supplemental food programs because of immigration status or income limitations. Given such, we are grateful to serve about 1,800 community members a week.

Without RFU each week for the vegetables given, our house would sorely miss the fresh vegetables in our diet. With the ever increasing prices, SSDI and EBT do not cover our food needs. With governmental entities being eliminated, RFU will be needed even more.

STATE-WIDE EMERGENCY FEEDING HOT MEAL PROGRAM

Two men in a commercial kitchen preparing multiple servings of food. One man is wearing a white shirt, black cap, and glasses, while the other man is wearing a black shirt and a brown beanie. The counter is filled with trays of plated meals including roasted chicken, mashed potatoes, and vegetables.

RFU is proud to partner with OREM (Office of Resilience & Emergency Management) to support the State of Oregon during declared disasters in any of the 36 counties. Early in 2024, we were able to help four different counties throughout the state with emergency feeding during an unexpected ice storm. RFU recirculated $47,000 back into local communities by partnering with local restaurants and food businesses. during this single deployment. We are excited to continue this relationship with OREM into the future and help in any way we are called.

I remember those first days of working with OREM and the opportunity to meet you, Amber. Jeff told me we’d be friends, he couldn’t have possibly explained how integral to our work you and the amazing RFU team would be.

FOOD TRUCK PROGRAM

Food truck with a large round wooden sign that reads 'ROGUE FOOD UNITS' with a fork and spoon logo. The truck has festive bunting and a disco ball hanging in the window, with colorful string lights in the background.

We are excited to support Southern Oregon communities in times of a local disaster and beyond by providing hot meals to support disaster affected residents as well as being able to offer our Food Truck as a mobile kitchen to serve as a temporary space for food businesses. In the event someone loses their facility in a disaster, this will allow them to continue to generate revenue while taking care of their own community. In the times where we are not in an acute disaster, our Food Truck will focus on supporting the development of our robust local food systems by prioritizing Oregon producers. We are constantly building relationships with allied organizations while increasing our visibility in the community.

I worked with RFU this fall cooking out of their food truck, but serving my food. I look forward to working with them in the future when the opportunity arises. The work they are doing is something that we all should be involved in, helping heal our own community members through healthy food cooked with love.

MRE PROGRAM

Three glass jars filled with different preserved vegetables or herbs on a colorful floral tablecloth.

Our MRE program is multifaceted! While preparing for a large-scale disaster, we are working with Oregon based chef's to create freeze dried meals to nourish Oregonians as hot meals during traumatic times. We are prioritizing healthy, organic, regional products to once again support and build our local food system. These meals will be shelf stable for up to 25 years and will ideally be stockpiled throughout the state so that even when a major event disrupts our food supply chain, we will be supported with these meals made with care. We have just completed our first recipe, a vegan curry, and plan for production to begin summer of 2025!

We live in Cottage Grove. During the recent ice storm you sent food boxes to Cottage Grove. My husband and I were not able to get into town. We were out of power for eleven days. Our sweet neighbor brought us a food box. Everything in the box was organic and healthy. We can’t thank you enough for what you do in many communities. God bless you all and the food program. During this storm we have had so much help from our neighbors. So many blessings.
